Hello Everyone,

Hopefully some of you very knowledgeable people can help me on this query. Can anyone name the shops(in order) from Brown's Tobacconist (corner of Sussex Street) to Woolworth's shop on George's Street. I know Cooney's pub was there and Dixon's Newsagent was next to the tobacconists, but can't really remember the exact position or names of any other shops or businesses on that stretch. Someone told me recently that Weir's pub occupies the same site as Cooney's did(in the 1960s). However my recollection of Cooney's is that it wasn't as wide as the present day Weir's site and also I wouldn't be quite sure that it was in the exact same position along that stretch. That is why I am asking the question, anyone I have asked locally can't recall either.

Thanks for all the great help and information on the shops from Brown’s to Woolworth’s. As far as I can see they were in order… 1. Thomas Brown (Tobacconist) 2. Dixon’s (Newsagent) 3. J.F. Dowling (Turf Accountant) 4. Cooney’s (Public House) 5. Hamilton’s (Baker’s & Confectioners) 6. F.W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd. (General Stores).

Special thanks to Gulliver for posting the 1956 directory of addresses for Dun Laoghaire, this helped greatly, along with some hard looking at Harjoe’s photos. I came to the conclusion that the present day Weir’s site (as suspected) does indeed occupy a double frontage and is bigger than the old frontage of Cooney’s. The bookies shop has disappeared and the café mentioned above is now the present internet café. So Weir’s occupies both Cooney’s and the bookies site.
Thanks again for all your help and I’m sure that I will be back with lots more questions throughout this excellent and very enjoyable forum.
