Hello Grammer,

Not really sure what the question is regarding the 1/2% reduction in VAT - but if you have calculated a total cost on an item which costs €100 and add vat at 21.5% the total becomes €121.50, now if you are told the vat is now 21% some people have calculated that to be:

€100 + 21.5% = €121.50
€121.50 - 0.5% which equals €120.89 (an apparent saving of €0.61)

This is not correct as you are actually calculating 0.5% of the figure which has already been increased by 21.5%. The calculation should be started again to read:

€100 + 21% = €121.00 (an actual saving of €0.50 or €0.11 less than previous method)

There is also a method of adding percentage increases which is used in business to include profit margins and can be found on many calculators which works as follows:

€100 + 21.5% = €127.39 ???

If you now calculate 21.5% of €127.39 which equals €27.39 and then subtract that from €127.39 you are left with €100, so it must be correct......

To see how this can cause confusion in the workplace try this on a standard calculator:

100 x 21.5 press "%" button and then "+" button = €121.50

Now try this:

100 press "+" 21.5 press "%" = €127.38853

good one KellyKid ---

calulations like that could mean a bank could make a nice tidy profit with no effort at all --ooops sorry the + is in the wrong place

A clown has to cross an extremly long bridge in one trip.
He is carring four bags of gold, each weighing ten pounds.
The clown weighs one-hundred-and-twenty pounds.
The bridge, being old, can only hold one-hundred-and-fifty pounds.
How does the clown cross in ONLY one trip with all his gold?

He ties a piece of string around one bag and leaves it at the start of the bridge, walks across with the other 3 bags, then pulls the last bag across.

What can I say, that is the very first gold star I ever got, they were not given out when I was going to school. Thank you sooo much.

How do you put the 'fada's' on?

a bloke passed me on a bike this morning -all the cycling gear on -helmet -about 2grands worth of gear on him -thought he was after taking a wrong turn while competing in the Tor De France :D :D :D :D
any way back to what always puzzles me -these lightweight racing bikes -they have about 10 thousand gears on them -
does any one use more than 2 or 3 gears????????
sent from my PC and typed on a keyboard (old fashioned black colour) using three fingers

Grammer:

Asked the husband and son about your question. A real cyclist would use all the gears. The son was very much into cycling from the time he was 12 to about 25, he had a superlight bike with all the bells and whistles, he built it himself.

Strum ctrl + alt and e doesn't work on my laptop. :(

Grammer:

The fada, so far, is like the Scarlet Pimpernel. I'll try on this signature, a friend has given me an alternative way of adding it. Here goes........

Grammer, still fada less, it could be worse.

Try this Sinéad. :D

If you are using a Windows keyboard try this:

for á: hold down the alt key and type 0225
for é: hold down the alt key and type 0233
for í: hold down the alt key and type 0237
for ó: hold down the alt key and type 0243
for ú: hold down the alt key and type 0250

By the way, it only works when you type the numbers on the number pad at the right of the keyboard.

I was experimenting there and found that if you hold the alt gr (which is right to the space bar and hold e it works aswell. é
